Suction Lift Example

Specifics:
Pond Size: 3000 GallonsPump Location: Above water level
Filter: Biological
Desired turn over is once an hour
Plant pond and waterfall
Koi Application #1
Flow: 3000 gallons ÷ 1 hour = 3000 gph
Head: (See Diagram Below)
Static Head - Discharge head: 9.0 feet
Suction Head - 2 feet
Total Static Head - 11 feet
Friction head:
Discharge Pipe: 1.5 feet
6.0 feet
8.0 feet
1.0 feet
12.0 feet - Equivalent length for two 90° elbow @ 6’ each
+ 1.5 feet - Equivalent length for one value @ 1.5’ each
Total discharge pipe length = 30.0 feet when using 2" PVC
Suction pipe: 3.0 feet
8.0 feet
0.6 feet
0.2 feet
6.0 feet - Equivalent length for one 90° elbow @ 6’ each
+ 1.5 feet - Equivalent length for one valve @ 1.5’ each
Total suction pipe length = 19.3 feet when using 2" PVC
Total Pipe Length 30.0 feet
+ 19.3 feet
49.3 feet when using 2" PVC
Locate the Plastic pipe schedule 40’ friction loss chart. The loss for 2 inch pipe with a flow of 3000 gph is 4.16 feet for every 100 feet of pipe or .0416 feet per foot of pipe.
Total foot loss: 49.3 feet
x .0416 loss per foot
Friction loss = 2.05 feet
Total dynamic head
TDH = Static head + friction losses + pressure head
TDH = (9.0 dsch + 2.0suct) + 2.05 + 0 = 13.05 foot = 13 foot
Refer to the Sequence 1000 performance chart.
Locate the intersection of 3000 gph @ 13’ head. It falls between the 5000SEQ22 curve and the 4300SEQ20 curve. Select the 5000SEQ22 curve for proper results.
