Looking to go to Japan to buy Koi?
Every year, since the fall of 2003, we have traveled to the Niigata Prefecture in Japan to buy the colored carp, Koi. Traveling in the mountains in Niigata and visiting the breeders where the best Koi in the world are bred is an amazing experience not to be missed.
Koi buying will take place between October 11 and November 4. There will be three separate groups, with no more than 6 people per group. Each group has a week devoted to Koi shopping.
Itinerary:
- Each group's flight will leave MSP (or other departure cities) on Monday and will arrive at the Narita airport on Tuesday.
- Koi shopping will take place from Wednesday to the following Saturday or Sunday.
- We do modify shopping dates & arrivals for sight seeing trips, if you are interested.
Estimated Charges Per Person:
- Airfare - $900.00 - $1000.00 for direct flight, round trip tickets. We have a travel agent we use or if you have your own that is fine to use them.
- Flex four rail pass - $175.00 (good for Northern Japan only) - 1 week JR rail pass $240.00
- Hotel – usually $80.00 - $90.00 per night per person
- Transportation for Koi purchasing - $50.00 per day
- Food costs about the same in Japan as it does here and the hotel serves breakfast (included as part of room charge).
- Koi purchased in Japan are subject to a 20% commission. The commission covers KHV testing and quarantine/overwintering care. Once a Koi is purchased in Japan, it belongs to you, we will care for them to the best of our ability. All shipping cost of the Koi from Japan to Minnesota (and Minnesota to ?) is the responsibility of the buyer. The average cost is $300.00 per box. You will only pay shipping for the Koi that you buy, so if there are five Koi in a box, and only one is yours, you only have to pay 1/5th of the shipping cost of that box.
