Function

Every Koi keeper’s dream is to achieve crystal clear water and a healthy environment for their beloved Koi. At the same time the maintenance is required to be at the lowest possible level. By using a rotary drum filter at the very first stage of the filtration process your dream can become true!

Rotary drum filters provide superb mechanical filtration with astonishing water clarity. At the same time they reduce the filter maintenance to almost zero because the cleaning of the filter is done automatically. A digital controller monitors the water levels and cleans the filter only when necessary. Any waste from the pond water is removed from the water column almost immediately and it does not dissolve in the water. Therefore the workload for the bio stage is significantly reduced and allows filter chambers with a very small footprint.

How does a Rotary Drum Filter work?

A rotary drum filter (RDF) is a mechanical filter, which removes waste and other fine particles from the pond water via a micro screen (filter screen). What makes the RDF so special is the ability to "monitor" the changes in water levels and "recognize" if the micro screen needs to be cleaned. Therefore a rotary drum filter automatically adjusts to the waste intake and only flushes if necessary. The other big advantage of RDF's is that all contaminant such as fish waste, uneaten Koi food etc. would not remain in the pond water. Instead all waste is flushed out (removed) from the water column automatically after a very short period of time.

The (contaminated) water is fed into the RDF by gravity or pump(s). The water flows into the collector chamber and from there into the inside of the filter drum. The filter drum is covered with a fine filter screen (standard 40 micron/300 mesh). The (contaminated) water can leave the drum only by passing the filter screen. Therefore all (waste) particles bigger than 40micron will remain in the inside of the filter drum. The mechanically clean water leaves the filter chamber via the outlet(s) of the filter chamber and it can then pass the following filter stages. The waste particles inside the drum will step-by-step plug the filter screen and the amount of water passing the screen will be reduced.

Therefore the water level in the filter chamber outside of the drum will decrease (gravity system), or the water level in the collector chamber will rise (pump fed system). If the water level reaches a certain minimum (gravity system) or maximum level (pump fed system), which can be set by the sensor of the RDF, a flushing process will be started by the included digital control unit. During the flushing process the drive motor will turn the drum and at the same time water is sprayed onto the filter drum with high pressure. The waste particles are flushed into a waste tray, which is installed inside of the filter drum, and leave the filter via the waste outlet into a drain.

The sensor located at the outside of the filter can set the desired maximum level difference manually. There is one sensor that can be used for either gravity mode or pump fed mode. The desired flushing time can be set with the timer of the control unit. Due to the function principle the filter only flushes when necessary, i.e. when the waste intake reaches certain limits.
